Over the years Redbridge group has raised considerable sums of money for various national and local charities. Our most recent chosen charity being the London Air Ambulance, which is based at the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel.
Having raised £1,250 for the charity over the last couple of years, in February we visited the charity at their offices to hand over the cheque to the charity and also to learn more about the amazing work they do. We had arranged for the presentation with David, the charity’s Community Fund-raising Area Lead, to visit the hospital and meet some of the fund-raising team.
Four of us, Fran, Elise, Martin D and Trev met at Whitechapel underground station and were shortly joined by Martin P who actually works at the hospital. Unfortunately, the weather was very rainy which meant any chance of a visit to the helipad was out of the question, which I was quite relieved at as I don’t like heights, so we visited the fund-raising team at their nearby offices.
David gave us a very interesting talk on the service and how they work, explaining that they are currently trying to raise funds to purchase and operate a second helicopter, and then answered various questions which we had. We then handed over the cheque to the charity and took some photos of us with David’s team and a giant presentation cheque, see our scrapbook on a club night for the pictures.
The money was raised in a number of ways, e.g. quiz nights, sponsored walks, club night auctions, and scavenger hunts. We’d like to thank everyone who contributed to or took part in these events and helped ensure the charity, which is entirely funded by public donations, and doesn’t receive any money from the NHS, can carry on its great work.
