Finding Crystals in the Famous Maze

As I’m sure you know, the Crystal Maze was a television game show which ran on Channel 4 for a number of years during the 1990’s, hosted originally by Richard O’Brien and later by Edward Tudor-Pole, in which teams had to complete a number of challenges to win crystals and time in the Crystal Dome for a final game, in which they could win prizes.

I loved the programme and many years ago created a club night event, based loosely on the programme, in which group members had to work as teams to complete various games against the clock, with the team successfully completing the most games being the winners. Over the years various games have been tried, modified, rejected or replaced and we now have 10 games which work well for us.

Our latest run-out of the game was in August 2024, with four teams taking part, with the five games zones set up in our weekly meeting place, Goodmayes Community Centre, with all teams playing their games simultaneously, before all moving onto the next zone and its game. The first set of games included: Domino Square, On the Spot, Anagrams, Crystal Cross and Lolly Sticks, with each game being classed as either a mental, skill, physical or mystery game, to help the teams decide who should play each game.

Once the teams had played all 5 games, these were replaced with a second set of 5 games. At the change-over point, the team captained by Fran was leading although only by 1 game. So it was all to play for in the second half. The second round of games included: Word Square, Remote Control Car Football, Matching Corners, Marble Shoot and (my favourite) Cryptic Keys.

The second round saw mixed fortunes for the teams, with some completing their games with only seconds of the 3 minutes allowed remaining, whilst others just failed by the narrowest of margins. After the completion of the second and final round of games, we had two winning teams, which were those captained by Fran and Pete, both having successfully completed 6 games.

It had been another very enjoyable evening, with all teams completing some of the games and we look forward to another go sometime next year.
