Crazy Golf, Pier & Cafes At Southend

Updated: Aug 25

A sunny summer’s Sunday morning saw 6 of us, Fran, Elise, Chris, Elliot, Edgar and me (Trev), meeting up at Ilford station at 10 a.m. for a visit to the seaside. Tickets purchased we boarded the train and after about an hour arrived at Southend.

We headed to the pier to meet up with the others at noon and were soon joined by Sherry, Martin P, Lee and Kim. We decided to have a healthy stroll along the sea-front heading east towards Shoeburyness. The tide was fully in, which meant that the available beach space was very crowded with people enjoying the sun and sea although some of us did go on the beach to walk along the water’s edge.  We then returned to the pier where we split up for lunch, either a take-away on the seafront or in one of the many cafes in the area. .

After lunch we met up and had a look around the pier museum, as it was free!. The museum displayed many items on the history of the pier, together with some of the old trains which used to trundle along the pier’s length of approximately 1.3 miles, and some of the old penny arcade machines. We then spit up to allow people to enjoy whatever they wished to do.

Fran, Elise, Chris, Edgar and Martin all went on the pier, some walking along it, with others taking the train to the end and back. I went for another (brisker) walk along the seafront, returning via the many amusement arcades dotted along the sea-front, playing on the motor cycle racing games, and enjoying a large ice-cream (almost compulsory on a trip to the seaside).

Meeting up again, we then decided that a game of crazy golf would be a good idea, and so headed off opting for one of the 9 hole courses, as time was getting on, with 5 of us playing. Trev won the golf but the scores were pretty close with Elise being the runner up just two shots ahead of the 4th placed person.

After this we headed for the station to make our way home, catching a train leaving at around 7 p.m. It had been an enjoyable day out, with good weather and ample opportunity for people to go off and do whatever they wished to do during the day. As Wallace and Gromitt might say, a grand day out.

Trev Eley.
