Members Explore Canal Museum

Redbridge 18 Plus members at London Canal Museum

Members of Redbridge 18 Plus enjoyed a day out to the London Canal Museum at King's Cross followed by a boat trip.

The London Canal Museum, located on the Regents Canal, is in a building which was previously a warehouse for ice. The exhibits showed how canals were originally produced for trade and the construction of them. There were several photos of the families who worked on the canals and a reconstruction of a canal boat they would have lived on. They also looked at a working model of a lock, which they each had a turn at operating.

Afterwards they went on a canal boat tour along Regent's Canal through Islington Tunnel. On the tour they were told how the tunnel was constructed and how the workers moved the boat through the tunnel.

Member Francesca Barclay said "It was fascinating to learn how canals were constructed and the canal boat tour through the tunnel was enjoyed by everyone."

This is just one of the great events put on by Redbridge 18 Plus who meet most Fridays from 8.30pm at Goodmayes Community Centre. For more info contact Trev on 0208 553 0947 or Fran on 0208 554 1364 or email us at webmail@redbridge18plus.org.uk
