New Year, New Events, 12th January 2012

The New Year got off to a lively start for the social group with the launch of a new events programme last week.

The list of activities in­cludes day trips, mid-week nights and Friday events.

Highlights in January are the area pool competition, a tour of the Olympic Park in Stratford and a trip to Brean Sands and the Norfolk Broads.

Event organiser Kerry Mann said: "We've got a whole hosts of events planned to get the new year off to a good start, and have a warm welcome for anyone new."

New members can take ad­vantage of a "January sale", by attending their first two events with the club for free and enjoying a discounted annual membership of £20.

Bowled Out at Dagenham, 22nd December 2011

One member of the social club bowled over all opposition when he was the highest scoring player at the area's annual competition at Dagenham Leisure Park.

The event attracted eight teams from the Anglia/ Southeast region of 18 Plus and each side played two games.

Although Redbridge had to settle for second place overall, Chris Mann managed to edge just ahead of Lee Gillbert from Chelmsford to take the best individual players title.

The Chelmsford team was the best overall. Mr Mann said he was "delighted" to grab the top score, adding: "The event has been a very enjoyable afternoon and I am hoping to repeat my success in the pool competition in January."

Upcoming Events in December, 8th December 2011

With Christmas around the corner, social group Redbridge 18 Plus has put some dates in the diary to make sure it celebrates the festive season in style.

On December 17, the group for 18-40-year olds will en­joy a Christmas meal at a pub and go head-to-head in a game of pool. It will be party time on Christmas Eve as members gather for a bash, also at a pub in the area, as the clock ticks to the big day.

The group meets every Friday at 8.30pm in Central Library, Clements Road, Ilford.

Other events planned for this month include a cinema night, a game of Indoor cricket and a visit to a pan­tomime show.

Members will head off on their annual trip to the Nor­folk Broads in May.

Party atmosphere in Hunstanton, 1st December 2011

Members enjoyed a "fantas­tic party atmosphere" when they joined groups from around the country at the annual holiday weekend in Hunstanton, Norfolk.

More than 250 members attended the fun and games,which included rock covers band Whole Lotta Hair, day­time karaoke and comedy film screenings. Saturday night saw a disco, comedian and 1980s group Dr and the Medics.

Member Gary Silver said: "It was a fantastic weekend away with live bands every night and everyone enjoying a great party atmosphere and having a good time."

Sunday allowed time for a stroll along the coast, Zum-ba dancing, a quiz and an­other disco and funk band.

BBC Trip, 10th November 2011

 

Members managed to get up close and personal with the nation's favour­ite television shows when they took part in a backstage tour of BBC Television Cen­tre. Their trip to the studios in White City, west London, was led by an experienced tour guide.The lucky visitors got to see how the news is broad­cast and visited the studios where many classic shows, including Blue Peter, Blackadder and Only Fools and Horses have been made.One of the highlights of the day last month, was in­specting the Tardis from Doctor Who. Other members had the opportunity to present a mock weather re­port.The group also created a short news broadcast and some took part in a game show based on The Weakest Link.Group member Terry Lit­tle said: "This was the first opportunity I've had to go to the BBC studios. I liked learning how the shows are produced behind the scenes and seeing the high-tech equipment used."Members also enjoyed a tour around some of the so-called haunted parts of Lon­don, including visits to some of the best known sites in the capital, such as London Bridge, St Paul's Cathedral and the Monument.The group meets on Fri­days at 8.30pm in the York Room, Central Library, Cle­ments Road, llford.To see a list of up-coming events, visit: www.redbridge18plus.org.uk.
